"No medication for the freaks
Just a deep black coffee dose
Magnetic chants embrace the night
As the Moon shows her command
Your body is the violin strings of this noir concerto
Slumberer but walking along the window ledge
Joy is lunatic…"
The Background Story
The turning of the season is upon us and we naturally embrace the darkness and celebrate its ghoulish inhabitants.
We are at Macken all deep set horror fans and we wish to present our dark offspring to the festivities. In the deathlike silence that shrouds the Sleepwalker, we pay tribute to the mind-manifesting dark theatre beautifully portrayed by the Swedish and German expressionist masters of early silent horror film and the fine developed art of horror poster aesthetics in the 60's and 70's.
The Phantom carrige awaits, take your seat and let the arts chill your blood and the stout spread its warmth.
The fine prints
The name of this beer is derived from the effects produced after drinking this stimulant stout.
The label visual is the offspring of the encounter between the 20’s-30’s film noir style and the 60’s-70’s horror fiction poster imagery.
The central character is influenced by the sleepwalker “Cesare” ruled by the moon from the film Das Cabinet des Doktor Caligari by Robert Wiene [1873-1938] and “Simon Garth” from the comic The Zombie [1973–1975] with some suggestions of “Crimson Ghost” in Evil Live by Misfits [1977-1983].
The face features of the central character are derived from Jonathan Hultén’s (our artist). The real Sleepwalker himself!
The overall composition is inspired by the epic post-apocalyptic and minimalism feel from the poster of the film Day of the Dead by George A. Romero.
The colour scheme and the logo font are derived from the poster of the film Körkarlen (The Phantom Carriage) by Victor Sjöström [1879-1960], based on the novel of the same name by Nobel prize-winning author Selma Lagerlöf [1858-1940].
Coffee stout dressed in black garments and a thick tan foam head. Dense but silky body rounded by oily oatmeal textures. Rich yet clean flavour unfolding a pleasant dark chocolaty and rummy bouquet. A good night must!
