"You are the road and the impulse of life
You are the shadow and the vital spark
You are your own god and your own slave
What you create, you can destroy
For your self sacrifice not fear but wisdom is the gift
You are the door opener and the bornless light within
Love is the law, love under Will"
The Background Story
Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.
The magician Aleister Crowley was crowned "The Wickedest man in the world" and his secret society was shrouded in many rumours. Regardless what you choose to think about Crowley and his followers, one can determine that magick actually is dangerous. Dangerous, because it urges you to break rules and expand your consciousness. For the one who delves into it there is no return, and possibly one has to be a tad wicked to cope with it...
About Crowley and his legacy there is certainly much to be said – but this time it is the very core of his work – The True Will - that we wish to pay homage to.
The Will that is deep inside when you peel the layers that encircles us.
It is with this very core of his identity our Brewmaster has been working in the preparations of this brew. Much time and dedication has been put into the making of this label and its background. With the help of vast academic literature and PhD thesis in Egyptology, he has learned to interpret hieroglyphs and create his very own spell in the vein of Crowley, the one we can see depicted on the artwork of the label.
To manifest ones own True Will. To celebrate the important people in life and yet to be able to stand strong alone like the Hermit.
Love is the law. Love under Will.
The fine prints
This limited edition brew is a homage to the English ceremonial magician and occultist Aleister Crowley's [1875-1947] work and his doctrine “Thelema” (Greek: ΘΕΛΗΜΑ) - "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law".
The name of the label is derived from Aleister Crowley's belief that every individual has a True Will to be distinguished from the ordinary wants and desires of the ego. The True Will is essentially one's purpose in life. The goal of attaining self-realization by one's own efforts without the aid of any divine authority.
A broad spectrum of inspiring sources related to Aleister Crowley’s work are comprised in the visual concept of this label:
1. The Egyptian Stele of Ankh-ef-en-Khonsu [c. 725 BCE] also known as "The Stele of Revealing".
2. The doctrine book “The Book of the Law” (Liber AL vel Legis) [8th-10th April, 1904] by Aleister Crowley
3. The book “Magick, Liber ABA, Book 4 Part II” by Aleister Crowley
4. The book “The Lesser Key of Salomon - Goetia: The secret seal of Solomon” by Aleister Crowley
5. The novel “La vie de Gargantua et de Pantagruel” (lit. Gargantua and Pantagruel) [16th century] by François Rabelais [c. 1494-1553]- The Abbey of Thélème, where the free and self-containing nature rules own’s life
The central and foremost feature of the label artwork is our Brewmaster Andrés Furukawa's interpretation and transliteration of the Stele of Ankh-ef-en-Khonsu under Macken’s philosophy confirming the power of the human psyche and his True Will over the dual physical/mental universe and its secrets. It is choice of man to carry out with engagement and courage his/her life challenges and take his/her own responsibilities without blaming illusory divine entities created out from human’s mind. "The spirits of the Goetia are portions of the human brain" - Aleister Crowley.
Aleister Crowley is depicted in the upper part of the artwork à la Paul Gustave Doré’s [1832-1883] drawing technique wearing his Magician’s Crown and Wand at his Altar with the Lamen from Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.) and the Wing Sun Disk above.
The ceremonial Magician Aleister Crowley is within the Magician protecting circle, in which Andrés Furukawa's own spell inscription “Homo Est Rex Deorum Nuit Hadit Ra Hoor Khuit Chaos” (Man is king of Gods, Nuit, Hadit, Ra Hoor Khuit and Chaos) is engraved based upon the original spell as per Crowley's instructions in his work “Magick, Liber ABA, Book 4 Part II” .
The Magician protecting circle, i.e. the affirmation of the Magician's identity with the Infinite, is cast by the essential items of the Magician; the Chain, the Scourge, the Sword, the Crown, the Cup, the Dagger, the Censer and the John Dee’s Pentacle.
The Magician wears our artist Jonathan Hultén's signature as magical pendant due to it is the secret key of knowledge contained in the label artwork standing for our artist as the physical creator of this work.
The Macken’s logo appears at the bottom of the label accompanied by both frontside and backside sigils of the secret seal of Solomon.
The background of the label artwork is inspired by the interior walls from the Abbey of Thelema in Cefalu, Sicily, Italy, founded and led by Aleister Crowley himself and the Boleskine House; a manor on the south-east side of Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands, where Crowley partially performed the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage.
The colour scheme is in line with the instructions from “Magick, Liber ABA, Book 4 Part II” and the Book of the Law by Crowley as well as in the Egyptian beliefs; Blue is the soul and the sky, Yellow is the mind and the sunlight, Red is the vital dynamic force, the blood and the life.
The logo font is derived from Aleister Crowley’s signature.
